Mbps Converter — Convert Internet Speed Units Instantly
Convert between Mbps, MB/s, GB/s, and Kbps. Includes formula, worked examples, and common speed benchmarks.
Internet speed figures are quoted in different units depending on who is measuring — your ISP uses Mbps, your file manager shows MB/s, and network engineers talk in Gbps. Our Mbps Converter instantly translates between Megabits per second, Megabytes per second, Gigabits per second, and Kilobits per second. Enter any value and get all conversions at once — no formula required.
Conversion Formulas
- MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8
- Gbps = Mbps ÷ 1,000
- Kbps = Mbps × 1,000

Common Internet Speeds Explained
| Speed | Real-World Capability |
|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | Suitable for 1–2 users: HD streaming, light browsing. Inadequate for 4K or simultaneous users. |
| 100 Mbps | Good for 4–6 users: multiple 4K streams, video calls, gaming. 1 GB file downloads in ~80 seconds. |
| 500 Mbps | Excellent for large households: fast uploads, 4K on every device. 1 GB in ~16 seconds. |
| 1 Gbps | Future-proofed for smart home devices, simultaneous 4K, large file transfers. 1 GB in ~8 seconds. |
Note: Your download speed in MB/s is always 1/8th of your Mbps speed, because there are 8 bits in a byte.
FAQs
Why is my download speed in MB/s lower than my internet speed in Mbps?
Because there are 8 bits in every byte. Your internet connection speed is measured in Megabits (Mbps); file sizes and download speeds shown in your browser or file manager are in Megabytes (MB/s). Divide your Mbps speed by 8 to get your maximum MB/s download speed. A 100 Mbps connection maxes out at 12.5 MB/s.
What is the difference between Mbps and MBps?
Capitalisation matters. Mbps (lowercase b) = Megabits per second — used for internet connection speeds. MBps (uppercase B) = Megabytes per second — used for file transfer and download speeds. 1 MBps = 8 Mbps.
How do I convert Gbps to Mbps?
Multiply by 1,000. 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps. So a 2.5 Gbps fibre connection equals 2,500 Mbps. To go the other direction (Mbps to Gbps), divide by 1,000.
What Mbps speed do I need for 4K streaming?
Netflix recommends 15 Mbps per stream for 4K Ultra HD. Disney+ and Apple TV+ require 25 Mbps for 4K. For a household with two simultaneous 4K streams plus general browsing, 50–100 Mbps provides comfortable headroom.
Is 1 Gbps internet overkill for a home?
For most households, 100–500 Mbps is sufficient. 1 Gbps becomes valuable if you regularly transfer large files, have 10+ connected devices active simultaneously, use cloud backup services, or work with high-resolution video production.
