FBA vs FBM
Fulfilled By Amazon (FBA) means Amazon stores, picks, packs, and ships your inventory. Your listings earn Prime eligibility — a significant conversion boost. The trade-off: fulfillment fees, storage fees, and less control over packaging. FBA works best for small, fast-moving, lightweight products where storage costs stay low.
Fulfilled By Merchant (FBM) means you handle all storage and shipping. No FBA fees — but you pay for your own warehouse space, packing materials, and labor. FBM suits heavy or oversized products, slow-moving inventory, or sellers who already have a 3PL in place.
Rule of thumb: If your FBA fee (referral + fulfillment + storage) exceeds 35% of sale price and you have reliable self-fulfillment infrastructure, model FBM first.
FAQs
What fees does Amazon FBA charge sellers?
Amazon FBA fees include: (1) Referral fees — a percentage of the sale price (typically 8–15% depending on category); (2) Fulfillment fees — per-unit fees based on size and weight; (3) Storage fees — monthly charges per cubic foot ($0.78 non-peak, $2.40 peak Oct–Dec for standard items in 2026). There may also be removal, returns processing, and aged inventory surcharges.
How do I calculate my Amazon FBA profit margin?
Profit Margin = (Sale Price − Product Cost − Referral Fee − Fulfillment Fee − Storage Fee) / Sale Price × 100. Example: $29.99 sale price, $8 product cost, $4.50 referral fee, $5.06 fulfillment fee, $0.50 storage = $11.93 profit / $29.99 = 39.8% margin.
Is FBA or FBM more profitable?
It depends on product size, weight, and sales velocity. FBA suits fast-moving, lightweight items where storage fees are low. FBM suits heavy, slow-moving, or oversized items where FBA storage fees would erode margins.
What is the Amazon FBA size tier for my product?
Amazon classifies products into Small Standard, Large Standard, Small Oversize, Medium Oversize, Large Oversize, and Special Oversize. A product is Small Standard if it weighs 1 lb or less and measures 15x12x0.75 inches or smaller. Size tier directly determines your fulfillment fee.
Are Amazon FBA fees the same in the US and UK?
No. Amazon operates separate fee structures for each marketplace (Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, etc.). Currency, referral percentages, and fulfillment fee amounts differ. This calculator covers the US marketplace.
