Education Glossary — Key Terms Explained
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- A standardised measure of academic performance on a 4.0 scale in the US. A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0. Weighted GPA assigns higher points to honors/AP courses (A = 5.0 in AP courses).
- Weighted GPA
- A GPA that accounts for course difficulty. AP, IB, and honors classes count for more points than standard classes. Weighted GPA can exceed 4.0. Colleges often recalculate on their own scale for comparison.
- Credit Hour
- A measure of academic workload. One credit hour typically represents one hour of class per week per semester. A standard full-time course load is 12–18 credit hours per semester. GPA is often weighted by credit hours.
- FAFSA (US)
- Free Application for Federal Student Aid — the US government form used to determine financial aid eligibility. Filed annually. Determines grants, subsidised loans, work-study eligibility. File early — some aid is first-come, first-served.
- Student Finance (UK)
- The UK government student loan system. Tuition Fee Loan (up to £9,250/year) and Maintenance Loan (based on household income and study location). Repaid at 9% of income above £25,000 (Plan 5) and written off after 40 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0). For a weighted GPA, multiply each grade point by the number of credit hours for that course, sum all (grade points × credits), then divide by total credits. Example: A in a 3-credit course (4.0×3=12) + B in a 4-credit course (3.0×4=12) = 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43 GPA.
What grade do I need on my final exam?
Use the formula: Required grade = (Target grade − Current grade × (1 − Final exam weight)) ÷ Final exam weight. Example: need 80% overall, currently at 75%, final is worth 30%: (80 − 75 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (80 − 52.5) ÷ 0.30 = 91.7% on the final.
How much will I repay on a UK student loan?
UK student loans (Plan 5, post-2023) are repaid at 9% of income above £25,000 per year. If you earn £30,000, you repay 9% × £5,000 = £450/year = £37.50/month. The loan is written off after 40 years. Most graduates on average salaries won't repay the full amount.
What is considered a good GPA?
In the US: 3.5–4.0 is excellent (President's List / Dean's List); 3.0–3.49 is good; 2.5–2.99 is satisfactory; below 2.0 risks academic probation. For graduate school applications, most programs want 3.0+ minimum, competitive programs want 3.5+. In the UK, degrees are classified: First (70%+), 2:1 (60–69%), 2:2 (50–59%), Third (40–49%).
